BROCKLEBANK : ‘FIFE LEADING THE WAY IN RECYCLING’

A new Audit Scotland report, ‘Protecting and improving Scotland’s environment’, has shown that Fife is one of the top recyclers in Scotland but has also highlighted that the SNP Government’s waste management and recycling targets are unlikely to be met.

Fife’s total recycling rate of 43% is the third best in the country and is already above the national target for 2010 of 40%.

Commenting, Conservative MSP for Mid Scotland and Fife, Ted Brocklebank, said;

“All Fifers should be very proud of this news and I am particularly pleased that we are giving such a strong lead to the rest of the country in our efforts to increase recycling. Over the past five years there has been a year on year rise of nearly 4% in Fife’s recycling rate. Both the public and the Council should be commended for their excellent efforts in leading the rest of the country.

“However, the report points out that the Government target of recycling 40% of municipal waste by 2010 is in danger of being missed by Scotland as a whole, and that the 50% recycling target for 2013 is likely to be missed by a significant margin.

“This news is very worrying and shows that the waste management infrastructure across Scotland is not sufficient to achieve the Government’s targets. It would be very disappointing if Fife’s efforts to further improve its recycling rate were hindered by a lack of infrastructure. I urge the Council and the SNP Government to work hard to ensure that this does not become a reality.”
