Date: 25 November 2009 BROCKLEBANK : WIDE SUPPORT CALL FOR ST ANDREWS FESTIVAL Conservative MSP for Mid Scotland and Fife, Ted Brocklebank, is urging all St Andreans to give their full support to this weekend’s St Andrews Festival. The festival was in danger of being cancelled earlier in the year and needed an award of £40,000 from the Scottish Government to ensure it went ahead.
Commenting, Mr Brocklebank said;
“I would urge all the locals in St Andrews to give their full support to the St Andrews Festival this weekend. There is a fantastic line-up of events ranging from a torchlight procession and farmer’s market to exhibitions and ghost walks, with a superb Son et Lumiere show set to be seen at the Cathedral and St Mary’s Quad over all three nights.
“The Festival has been dogged by financial problems this year and at one stage there was the very real possibility that it could be cancelled. Thankfully the Scottish Government listened to calls for assistance from myself and other local politicians and £40,000 of funding was secured. This has allowed the festival to take its rightful place as a focal point of the finale celebrations in this Year of Homecoming.
“It would be unforgivable if the town named after out patron saint was ever restricted in staging its local festival due to funding constraints, as nearly happened this year. A strong attendance at this year’s Festival will hopefully go a long way in helping to secure future funding and ensure the continuation of the St Andrews Festival for years to come.”
