Date: 02 November 2009 TORIES CONDEMN FIFE COUNCIL’S LETHARGY IN TACKLING REPEATED FLOODING OF THE KINNESS BURN The heavy rain in St Andrews on Sunday has once again caused the Kinness Burn to flood, causing damage to the surrounding properties. The flood damage was so severe that some 20 residents had to be evacuated from their properties and take shelter in Victory Memorial Hall.
Commenting, Conservative MSP for Mid Scotland and Fife, Ted Brocklebank, said;
“It is unacceptable that Fife Council has yet to take any action to prevent the repeated flooding of the Kinness Burn in St Andrews. Neighbouring residents have again had to count the cost of flood damage to their properties, and in some instances be evacuated, as the burn is unable to cope with heavy rainfall.
“For numerous years local residents and the Conservatives have repeatedly called for Fife Council to take measures to reduce the propensity for flooding of the Kinness Burn. Fife Council’s inaction has seen the Kinness Burn steadily build-up a large amount of sediment over time, reducing its ability to cope with heavy rainfall. Dredging the burn would provide increased capacity for the water to flow and help prevent further instances of flooding.”
