BROCKLEBANK IMPRESSED BY SAFE DRIVE STAY ALIVE INITIATIVE TO REDUCE CASUALTIES ON FIFE ROADS

Fife Community Safety Partnership recently visited the Scottish Parliament to promote their Safe Drive Stay Alive campaign to MSPs. This Fife Community Safety Partnership initiative has been successful in reducing the number of young people killed on Fife’s roads, particularly amongst those under 25. The Safe Drive Stay Alive roadshow was seen by over 5000 young people last year and aims to bring home to the harsh realities of driving without necessary care and attention.

Commenting on the initiative, Conservative MSP for Mid Scotland and Fife, Ted Brocklebank, said;

“I was very impressed with the work being done by the Fife Community Safety Partnership to reduce the number of young people killed on Fife’s roads through the Safe Drive Stay Alive campaign. This is an innovative and hard-hitting initiative which uses first hand accounts from an accident survivor, a family member who has suffered a tragic loss and emergency service workers to highlight the consequences of dangerous driving to young people just starting to drive.

“What is particularly impressive is the long-term effect that the Safe Drive Stay Alive event is having on participants. Four months after seeing the event 94% of participants felt it had increased their awareness of the consequences of dangerous driving and 48% stated it made them more likely to think about road safety.

“The road accident figures for Fife have vastly improved in recent years and are now well ahead of national targets. In 2008 there was a 52% reduction in the number of people killed or seriously injured in road traffic accidents since 2000. The education of young drivers has been a crucial component in helping decrease the number of road casualties and I would like to commend the Fife Community Safety Partnership for their excellent work.

“However, last year there were still 14 fatalities on the roads of Fife. Hopefully the combined effect of the Safe Drive Stay Alive roadshow and other initiatives will in the future allow us to reach a point where we have no fatalities on Fife’s roads.”
