Date: 29 September 2009 BROCKLEBANK : ‘EXCELLENT REDUCTION IN CRIMES AND OFFENCES RECORDED IN FIFE’ Commenting on new crime figures released today by the Scottish Government which show that the total number of recorded crimes and offences in Fife has dropped by 8% over the past year, Conservative MSP for Mid Scotland and Fife, Ted Brocklebank, said;
“I am very encouraged that Fife has seen an 8 percent reduction in the total number of crimes and offences recorded over the past year. This is the second largest reduction of any police force area in Scotland and above the national average of a 2 percent reduction. The whole of Fife Constabulary, under the leadership of Scotland’s only female Chief Constable, Norma Graham, must be commended for their commitment and effort over the past year to achieve this reduction.
“What is particularly pleasing is that the strategic work of Fife Constabulary is having a real effect. In dealing with crimes of dishonesty there are dedicated teams targeting repeat offenders, collaborative work with the Procurator Fiscal and greater provision of security advice and prevention techniques. These efforts have all contributed to decreasing crimes of dishonesty by 8 percent.
“However, there has been an increase in some recorded crimes, most notably non-sexual crimes of violence. I am informed that reducing these crimes is a priority of Fife Constabulary and I am sure that every effort will be made to ensure that this occurs.
“It is vital that SNP Government does not hinder the progress made in Fife by continuing to pursue its soft-touch justice policies, such as abolishing short-term prison sentences.”
