Date: 16 September 2009 BROCKLEBANK: ACTION ON AFFORDABLE HOUSING IN ST ANDREWS DOES NOT ECHO COUNCIL’S WORDS A new poll by Shelter Scotland has shown that 84% of Scots believe affordable housing should be a top priority in the next Scottish budget. This has been welcomed by Fife Council, despite their actions in St Andrews and elsewhere in North East Fife appearing to show that they do not share this view in practice.
Commenting, Conservative MSP for Mid Scotland and Fife, Ted Brocklebank, said;
“Fife Council yesterday welcomed a poll showing that an overwhelming majority of Scots see the provision of affordable housing as a top priority. However, this seems to be in direct contradiction to the SNP-LibDem run administration’s position in St Andrews where affordable housing appears not to be a Council priority.
“In the much-maligned St Andrews local plan the Council has made provision for only the minimum affordable housing requirement of 30%, despite overwhelming evidence that the need for affordable housing in St Andrews is far greater than this.
“If Fife Council genuinely supports the view that affordable housing is a priority then they must urgently look again at the St Andrews local plan. Not only does the plan not address the need for new affordable housing, it ignores the best interests of St Andrews and its people.”
