Date: 08 September 2009 Europe and Foreign Affairs The Scottish Government today published its paper on Europe and Foreign Affairs as part of its highly discredited National Conversation.
Commenting, Conservative Shadow Minister for Europe and External Affairs, Ted Brocklebank, said;
“It is well known that the National Conversation is little more than an SNP vehicle for promoting independence. Over £700,000 of taxpayers’ money has already been wasted by the SNP government on the National Conversation and this has come at a time when support for independence is at an all time low.
“The publication of the SNP government’s paper on Europe and Foreign Affairs has only reinforced the notion that the National Conversation is a nationalist propaganda tool. The paper looks at the opportunities for an independent Scotland in Europe with the Minister for Europe and External Affairs, Mike Russell, saying that an independent Scotland would continue to be a member of the EU, enjoy full involvement in all EU institutions and provide Scotland a stronger voice.
“Once again this is just nationalist bluster as there is absolutely no guarantee that an independent Scotland would even become a member state of the EU or that it would have a prominent role. Not only would we have to apply for membership to the EU but we would also have to redefine our relationships with other organisations such as the UN and the IMF. This would undoubtedly lead to Scotland having less influence on international matters than we currently have as part of the union.
