Date: 07 August 2009 BROCKLEBANK : ‘COUNCIL MUST INCREASE PROPOSED INVESTMENT FOR CUPAR DRAINAGE SYSTEM’ Commenting on news that only £150,000 is set to be allocated by Fife Council to improve Cupar’s drainage system, Conservative MSP for Mid Scotland and Fife, Ted Brocklebank, said;
“The investment of £150,000 that has apparently been earmarked for the improvement of Cupar’s drainage system by Fife Council is lamentable. I accept that overhauling the entire Cupar drainage system is unfeasible, due to the huge costs involved. However, the Council must do all it can to improve the drainage system and ensure that the scenes seen last month are not repeated again. This requires far more substantial investment from Fife Council than they are currently proposing.
“I met with local residents and shopkeepers after the flooding in July and they were understandably very frustrated at the current situation. For many it was the second time within a year that they had premises flooded and some have had to close businesses and lose trade for weeks whilst repairs and renovations are carried out.
“The damage that these repeated instances of flooding have caused to the local community cannot be allowed to continue. Fife Council must address the problem urgently and invest appropriately.”
