Date: 05 August 2009 BROCKLEBANK URGES SCOTTISH WATER TO ENSURE ELIE HARBOUR BEACH REGAINS INTERNATIONAL BLUE FLAG STATUS Commenting on news that Elie Harbour beach has lost its international blue flag status after ten years of holding the honour, Conservative MSP for Mid Scotland and Fife, Ted Brocklebank, said;
“It is disappointing that Elie Harbour beach has lost it blue flag status. The beach was one of only seven beaches throughout Scotland to be able to display the prestigious blue flag and I know this was a source of pride within the local community.
“For this to happen at the height of the tourist season is particularly worrying as tourists could be put off visiting the beach, with the knock-on effect that money will be lost by local businesses. It is imperative that all measures are taken by Scottish Water to ensure that the quality of the bathing water is returned to the previous award-winning levels of cleanliness. This will allow Elie Harbour Beach to regain its blue flag status as soon as possible and ensure that any detrimental impact to the local economy is kept to a minimum.”
