BROCKLEBANK WELCOMES IMPROVED FIFE ACCIDENT FIGURES

Fewer people have been killed or seriously injured in road accidents in the Fife area, according to new figures released by the Scottish Government.

Provisional Government statistics for road accidents, in which one or more person was killed or seriously injured, show that in 2008 the Fife area has already exceeded the Government’s casualty reduction targets for 2010. Targets set in 2000 were based on the 1994 -1998 figures where on average 267 people were killed or seriously injured in road traffic accidents in the Fife area every year.

Commenting, Conservative MSP for Mid Scotland and Fife, Ted Brocklebank, said;

“These new figures make excellent reading. In 2000 the Scottish Executive set the target of a 40 percent reduction in the number of people killed or seriously injured in road accidents. This target was to be achieved by 2010. The 2008 figures for Fife show that this target has already been surpassed, with a 52 percent reduction in the number of people killed or seriously injured in a road traffic accident.

“I would like to congratulate Fife Constabulary for their excellent work in helping Fife to surpass the Scottish Government’s targets ahead of schedule. However, there were still fourteen fatalities in Fife last year and I would urge Fife Constabulary to continue working hard to reduce this number, so that in the future we may reach a point where we have no fatalities on Fife’s roads.

“I have recently received an assurance from the Transport Minister, Stewart Stevenson, that he will look again at the need to upgrade the Parbroath Junction on the A92, a well-known accident black spot in North East Fife. I hope that the construction of a roundabout will be brought forward so as to remove the potential for any further accidents at this dangerous intersection.”
